The former Battery D Battery site at Krome Avenue served as a refugee- processing center during the Mariel boat lift in 1980. Both the IFC and LA of the site housed Cuban refugees. The former LA of the site serves in this capacity today.
The Krome Avenue facility is frequently a focal point in the Miami Cuban community’s battles against Castro and in their efforts to ensure that U.S. policy makers retain the Cold War’s hard-line stance against communist Cuba.
